Why Do You Use the Original Texture Mode in Your Comparison Shots?

Hi Everyone! Quick follow up post today. Several people have asked why we use the Original Texture mode when putting together our comparison shots. I think this is an excellent question, especially for those who have not yet played the UHD version of the game. There are several reasons for this approach, which I will share with both text and screenshots to show what I mean. The primary reasons are:

1. The majority of the textures in the game have not been redone. Instead they have been resized to be twice as large as the original textures, and a filter has been applied to smooth the the image. I’m sure this is due to budget and time constraints, which I think are understandable.

2. In situations where the textures have been remade, the new textures often do not match the look and tone of the originals. Additionally, they generally do not leverage the real-world original sources of those textures. The result is a different look and feel, and since our desire is to match the original textures, they would not make for a good comparison.

3. Some people might ask, “Why not post comparison shots between the Original, the UHD HD Mode, and your revisions?” The reason for that is simply time – it takes time to take the screenshots, edit them together, etc. Of course, this is time that could be spent making progress. So we try to strike a good balance between making progress and sharing updates, and part of that balance means choosing one mode to compare to.

Here are the screenshots that should show what I mean:

Amazing comparison and great work!!! Have you tried contact with Capcom? Maybe they can add your work as High-Textures Pack DLC on Steam?

Cris Okay man that was just great thanks a ton for showing me the difference and I must say even if capcom releases another RE4 for next gen consoles, it won’t be able to match your version of RE4 because they never going to put the time and efforts you guys have invested into it.I agree with your reasons for not using UHD screen shots now. Thanks again for taking the time to let us see the difference, really appreciated.

Wowsers 0.o you guys are putting the “pro” team to shame…Keep up the great work!!!
PS. I am glad you have made decision to use “source” material from original release vs UHD rehash.

let not be harsh on the development team, they did an ok job at porting the game. plus I am sure capcom didn’t pay them much, remember they did outsource it, so probable they choose the lowest bidder. Now what i would like to criticize is the draconian way capcom treats pc ports and pc communities. they should have released the source code, i mean, if they are not going to do a good job they should at least make it easy for others to do so. It makes me sad seeing capcom valendo madre xD, specially since they are so reluctant to change their way, i dunno, maybe its a Japanese companie thing, or maybe they will change, at least they are releasing more stuff like re remake on pc. now lets just hope they open their eyes and start supporting the pc community more often ,since it could help sales. By the way cris, have you talked with any capcom reps?

In how much percent you consider this project progress ?

    • Cris says:

Coincidentally, I recently added this entry to the FAQ ( https://www.re4hd.com/?page_id=104 ). Hope this helps answer your question:
      ———-
      How much has been completed?

We are working through the game in the following order:
      – Environmental Textures
      – Items and Weapons
      – Enemies, NPCs, Playable Characters, Misc.
      – Mercenaries, Separate Ways, and anything not covered above

As of Oct 25, 2014, we are approximately 30% through the environmental textures. I will update this periodically (every 2 months or so) as we progress.

just one little thing i noticed, is that on the door on the first picture the iluminados logo is carved in and in the original source it looks like it is popping out. In my opinion, it could be easily replace with the logo you guys used on the gate leading to the church as a fast fix. I am fully aware that these are still on development so there is no need to answer the comment, as always thanks for the time and effort, good luck guys!

As video games companies like Capcom have reached such a level of decadence and depravity because of internet, it is good to see people doing things by passion.

  8. Matt says:

Imo the design in the last screenshot looks better in the Remastered RE4 than in your mod. It looks… odd.

    • Matt says:

Well shit, nevermind. You put the screenshots in a different order for the last picture. The second image in that picture looks best, which is your Recreated one :P.

      Keep up the great work!

Worth noting that they probably used original source textures for a few textures, like this for example:

    • kaludio says:

i think the blurred the texture and applied a black crack filter to make the wood and the texture more diffined

      • albert says:

Yes, That’s exactly what they did. They aplied dark/bright and colour of original texturea over the detail from a new hi-res tree texture 😉

        • Lukas says:

Oh, alright. Please make a BIG update soon.

        • Lukas says:

But the technique works though, you could do something similar in some instances when you can’t find the original textures, this technique is really convincing.

          • Pedro says:

When that happens, Cris and Albert remake the entire texture, that gives a much better result than just upscaling and filtering.

But for instances where developers have a remake to launch and little time, it’s a good idea to do that.

  10. Crapula says:

Great job!! I’m really impresed!! I am finishing the game right now, being the second time (first was with the original ages ago). I will wait for your project to finish so i can play the game on hard and get the last steam achievement.
Thank you very much for this!!!

  11. Umar says:

You guys are great. The work you have done in not so far time is more better and authentic to classic version. Keep up the good work amigos ?
