Lost in the Garden…

Tonight I’m sharing some progress updates from my work the garden section. This was one of the most memorable areas of the game to me when I first played it back on the Gamecube, so it’s been a pleasure refining this section. I can also say that even though I know the maze very well, the sound of dogs suddenly coming around a corner still startles me a bit (especially when I thought I’d cleared them all out :)). Enjoy!

Wow, those plants. Was always that ugly? You made it look like real life bro, awesome friking job!

  2. Brad Bice says:

    Amazing job, as always.

I’m building a computer just to be able to play your version. Keep up the great work.

  3. Roman says:

    Impressive as always

  4. Boris says:

I’m looking forward to seeing the retextured fountains in the maze. They are probably quite difficult to get right.

  5. Bad Guy says:

    Nice work as always

  6. Alvare says:

I’m lost looking at these (ivy) textures. xD

  7. I am so excited for this, I look at your site daily.. I love the leaves, look AMAZING.. There is a straight line cutting off some of the leaves though, not sure if you noticed.. Doesn’t bug me, just reporting incase you missed it

  8. Cory Z. says:

Yeah, like Timothy said above me, it looks like there is a slight UV issue in the middle-lower (leftish) of the ivy you did. It looks WAY better though so if you can’t fix it, I doubt anybody would complain.

But just incase it was overlooked πŸ™‚

    • Cris says:

Thanks! Definitely not overlooked – I just happened to pick one of the few spots where it appears. πŸ™‚

      • Alvare says:

        Lolz. πŸ˜€
Afterwards, it sounded like you purposely wanted to show us that exact spot to then make the uv seam magically disappear in a screenshot of a future update. xD

  9. Bob says:

Great work! I’m actually really impressed by the original leaves texture. It looks almost abstract up close, but looking at the thumbnail or squinting at the large image, it looks like the texture you have made. Great compromise by the original developers!

i don`t remember those plants being so ugly when i used to play this game on my Ps2.

    • albert says:

You are right… They were worse! XD
Just kidding… but 50% of PS2 port textures were even lower resolution

In this case they were the same: 64 x 64 pixels! X(

      • Alvare says:

“Oh don’t worry, the camera probably won’t go too near the ivy bushes, let’s make them very lowres.” πŸ˜›

  11. Marcus says:

I just donated $20 because of those screenshots. πŸ™‚

Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

    • Cris says:

Thank you so much for your support and generosity! It’s been an awesome journey so far and we’ll keep working hard until the end. πŸ™‚

  12. Curtis Day says:

Love your work! Are you available for hire for texturing? Hit me up!

    • Cris says:

Thank you for the compliment and the offer, but I think it’s only one project at a time for us. πŸ™‚

    • Cris says:

Not a glitch – rather it’s an issue with the 3D model for the bush. It’s also present in the original version, but it’s less noticeable because of the low resolution of the textures. We’ve made note of this. Thanks!

  13. Mono says:

Amazing job guys, do you need help for anything ??
By the way, how do you improve base textures? by upscaling ? i try myself on an ugly texture to try it a bit but it was exaclty the same after i max the size up to 8 times and reduce to 4096 format

    • albert says:

      Thank you Mono!
All your feedback is the best help πŸ˜€ Many thanks to all of you!

Nope. we restore them finding the same texture/location Capcom used but in Higher resolution, when it’s available. But most times is a re-creation job in which we use dozens of differents textures and then we combine them and adust them to obtain a new HD texture that looks pretty similar to the original one.

One single PSD file for just one texture can be up to 1GB of layers and layers and layers and hours of work… XD

  14. Mono says:

Really impressive, it’s so close to the original, when you make things right it’s often heavy !
I follow your work for a while now, and i force myself to not download an try it, i want the final stuff and do it in a single run in professional with my blacktail and striker cranck up to enjoy every high detailed textures you work hard for, good luck guys you will make a lot of people happy !
