Two of the hardest textures to redo are Leon’s hair and his jacket — I think it’s darn near impossible to please everyone here. For the jacket there are multiple reasons that it’s hard to get right:
- The in-game original texture was so splotchy that it’s hard to make out the original intent
- Capcom’s official higher resolution renders of Leon don’t seem to match the in-game jacket
- There are tons of leather jackets out there of varying styles and patterns
- It’s difficult to find the right amount of subtlety for the texture – it’s easy to cross the line into something that stands out too much
In my original attempt, I think I erred to much on the side of subtlety. So, I’ve redone the texture and now have a result that I believe more closely matches the in-game original both in color and texture, without straying into “stands out too much” territory. Probably won’t please everyone, but for now I’m happy with the result:
[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”16″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_width=”240″ thumbnail_height=”160″ thumbnail_crop=”0″ show_slideshow_link=”0″ template=”/var/www/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/ngglegacy/view/gallery.php”]Leon’s hair presents its own difficulties:
- If you add too much detail or too many fine hairs, then you get a noticeable moire pattern during normal gameplay instances and it’s easy to stray from the original look
- If you add too letter detail, it’ll look okay during normal gameplay, but in closeups it won’t be an improvement over the original texture
So, here’s my attempt to find the right balance, maintaining a nice level of detail for closeups, without it turning into weird patterns at a distance or straying from the original look:
[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”15″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_width=”240″ thumbnail_height=”160″ thumbnail_crop=”0″ show_slideshow_link=”0″ template=”/var/www/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/ngglegacy/view/gallery.php”]And finally, I’ve completed the first Ganado:
- Finished his clothes and hands
- Dimmed his eye color a bit and reddened the whites of his eyes a bit to better reflect the Las Plagas inside him
- Added a bottom lip, which was missing from the initial revision of his face
- Retextured his axe
[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”17″ display=”basic_thumbnail” thumbnail_width=”240″ thumbnail_height=”160″ thumbnail_crop=”0″ show_slideshow_link=”0″ template=”/var/www/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/ngglegacy/view/gallery.php”]Also! As you know, earlier this week it became possible to texture mod the Ultimate HD version. I will be working to port over my progress to that version in the coming days, and once the first gameplay section is completed I’ll upload the files so you can try it out on the UHD version and on the Dolphin version.
Thanks, everyone, for the support, and especially to the handful that have donated so far.
The revised jacket looks great! I think my only complaint in the re-textured and revised jacket is the faded leather on the right arm. I think it stands out a bit too much. Other than that, the leather pattern and everything else is great. Really appreciate your effort making the game actually HD. Keep up the great work!
I think so too.. there is some brighter area on his forearm that is standing out too much.
I also think the details on the jacket, although perfect, are too small. Maybe you should blow it up a bit.. you see on the original how the jacket is thick and heavy by the large marks on it’s texture… I don’t know if you already tried that and looked bad… but overall it looks a bit flat compared to the original.
You know what? Why don’t you wait until you put your hands on the official HD texture for his jacket and try to improve based on that one? Although the official HD textures are not really very HD, the jacket looks very good and legit, maybe you wouldn’t have much trouble if you have that texture to work with.
Try looking up a bomber jacket because that’s what Leon is wearing. I think what crisdecuba is trying to achieve is making the game HD realism that doesn’t deviate too much from the original design. The original design has way too many defined cracks in the leather that it doesn’t look real if you imitate that to HD.
Here’s an example of a bomber jacket: http://www.schottnyc.com/images/800×800/47_12.jpg
Yeah I know… just saying.
Thanks, everyone, for the feedback! The brighter area on his arms is actually one of the specular highlights present in the Gamecube / Wii versions (the stuff that makes things look shiny throughout the game), so I can’t really get rid of it. It should not be present in the UHD version, though.
crisdecuba , please don’t listen lambda people like VIDAL or Gabriel trying influence your work.
To me your are a pro with huge talent , and its really annoying to see people who are just gamers make critisism .
So can you please make all the work without posting pics for every steps you make ?
(hope my english is correct.)
Hi Blaze! I appreciate your encouragement. I post pics because people like seeing the progress, and I enjoy the feedback. It’s fun to see the work develop. Thanks again!
I’m not sure what you have against Vidal and myself. If you re-read our comments, we praised his work. We gave structural criticism and he corrected us about that faded part on the right arm. You should really READ carefully before you insult someone.
Excuse mate, just look me up on LinkedIn and you will find that I’m not just a gamer, but I also work in the industry and guess what? Art department. Painting and texturing is my everyday job. I’m following this work up close because I love RE4 and I totally endorse the quality of the work is being done here. When it’s perfect, I say its perfect (I commented in almost every post), but when I think it could be improved somehow, I give my feedback in a constructive way. As Gabriel said, hold your horses and get to know your surrounds before insulting someone.
I undestand, but for the first time i (we) see a decent texture modder who keeps a cool head on his work so please do not waste everything.
I insist.
The hair looks great by the way..
The Ganado looks insane. You nailed that one.
About the jacket. It needs stains on the rims around the collar and cuffs.
Why aren’t we funding this?
Keep up the good work, and love the active posting! On your site troughout the week =D
The hair is perfect. Don’t touh it any further: it’s cool the way you have it now.
Regarding the jacket:
A) The clearer areas of the jacket (neck and wrists) are supposed to be made of fur or thick fleece, not leather.
B) I think you should add the original upscaled texture as a 50% layer over yours. The thing is that you should watch at your screen from a distance. You can notice the bumps and spots on the original one from a distance, but yours has such small detail that it can only be noticed up close. If you are using photoshop, I’d set the original one upcaled as a layer over yours, then use a sharpen filter to get some more detail, then set the layer as “darken” and set opacity to 50% or so.
Thanks for the feedback! Could you choose one of the images and indicate what you mean by the “clearer areas” of the jacket?
Sorry for the rushed photoshop job. This is what I mean:
http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2014/079/a/3/retexturing_proposal_by_terminento-d7azfm4.jpg
The areas around the neck and the ends of the sleeves should be made out of fur or fleece, not leather.
Also, as you can see, using the original texture as a layer over yours allows to have the best of both worlds: you can still see the gritty bumpiness, cracks and grain of the original from afar, yet you get to see the fine detail of texture of yours upon closer inspection.
What I did was copying the original texture (sans background), augmenting contrast (by 50% or over, I believe), sharp it, then overlay it on top of yours, and set its layer opacity in 35%. I believe I also took some saturation away as it got too brown.
Organic textures are always a pain in the ass. It is easier with inanimate objects, as it is more about the feel of the material, I believe.
Also, as you can see, I used the original gloves. They feel more shiny and detailed.
Also, I noticed something… weird when watching the first ganado in the video. After a while, I knew what it was: the eyes. The fact that you redid the eyeball texture makes the iris a tad smaller, and much more noticeable, giving his gaze a much more focused appearance. I wouldn’t touch the eyes textures if I were you. The change in the style of the gaze of a character is too noticeable even by the slightest of changes. The eyebrows are kind of darker on the upper part too, not sure if that makes a difference as well, but eyes are tricky.
Since ganados are supposed to have a blurry, distant otherworthly gaze, I wouldn’t touch the eyeballs textures, Take into account that eyes are rendered way too small most of the time on screen (50 pixels of height at the very best) so there isn’t a real need to redo them.
For that same reason, I wouldn’t redo the textures of the faces of Leon, Ashley, Ada, and the main cast in general. Mostly because most of the detail is conveyed via geometry (the models of these have way more poligons in the faces than the rest of the body), and because they have these clean, hollywood-like make-up faces. Adding too much texture to them would ruin it. And those face original textures were done to hold up pretty well up close to begin with. Also, when studying Arts they tough us a lesson: when working on a portrait, the difference of a single milimiter matters: just moving an eyelid a tad up or down changes the expression of a face completely. It is cool if you redo the clothing and hair, as those wont create such an “uncanny valey effect”. It doesn’t matter that much with ganados faces as they are supposed to be fucked up and… wrong.
One last note: I noticed you used a Toyota as a reference for the police car. You might find it usefull to know that the car is actually a Range Rover P38A:

Also, in Spain, there’s no such thing as Policia Especial. These guys are from Policia Nacional. Here’s the insignias:

Here’a a closeup of my jacket proposal. You can see that the detail you added is still there when up close:

Hola! Thanks for taking the time to lay this out. Here come some rapid fire responses!
1. The areas around the neck and sleeves – I think the reason I didn’t understand you at first is because the areas around the neck and sleeves are already a fleece texture, not leather (I chose a fleece texture rather than fur because of how the game applies the texture to the model). This closer shot may help: https://www.re4hd.com/wp-content/gallery/0010-leons-jacket/031403.jpg (I may go back and try out a different fur texture, but previous attempts looked rather poor once the texture was mapped and distorted onto the model.)
2. Using the original texture of the jacket – I tried out your suggestion and learned a couple of things. One is that the original texture is too low-res to add actual texture to the jacket (it basically adds blurry splotches). However, if I blur the original texture a bit, it does help the jacket match the original color of the jacket, in-game, a bit more, so I may keep it. Depends on how it looks in the PC UHD version once bump-mapping is applied.
3. The eyes of the Ganados – The eyes in the video aren’t the latest version, unfortunately. Here’s the latest version: https://www.re4hd.com/wp-content/gallery/0013-eye-correction/031901-3.jpg – Darkened a bit and blurred the edges of the iris a bit as well. I think redoing the eyes is worth pursuing, especially in instances where they’re part of a cutscene, although you’re right that it’s tricky (I may regret that after doing the 10th or 15th eyeball hahaha).
4. The eyebrows – You’re totally right. I’ll go back to that as time allows.
5. Redoing the texture for the main cast – I agree that they intentionally have clean, Hollywood type faces. The only real adjustments I’ll be pursuing are to eliminate pixelation where applicable. I’m not going to go through and add super-detailed pores or anything. No one wants Leon to look like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8tYhjRqm9wo/R9wlbd1K5_I/AAAAAAAAADE/zzsfVhJxwXA/s1600-h/realmario.jpg
6. The car – Good to know! The in-game textures for the dashboard / center console seem to be modified from the interior image you posted, but there’s definitely an opportunity to revise the steering wheel. I’ll add that to my list of things that need tweaking (at the very least I gotta remove the Toyota logo :)).
7. The insignias – Spot on. The texture that needs to be updated is the one for the cap. I’ll revise. π
Thanks again for taking the time to contribute!!
Β‘Hola!
Thanks for your quick reply!
-The new eyes a definitely an improvement. I think that the problem was that the animator opens the eye a bit unnaturally (try to open the outer edges of the lid while looking up front, it’s downright impossible) but in the original the eye kind of merged in the shdow cast by the supraorbital ridge, making the gaze look like one evil mass of darkness, it does now. You got it spot on!
-It’s good to hear that you also share my concern about characters’ faces!
-I happen to own a jacket that looks quite similar to Leon’s. I took some reference photos for the fleece:
http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/080/b/c/20140321_140954_by_terminento-d7b18p7.jpg

I took some more photos in case you want to use the leather texture. The jacket looks less brown and gritty in real life, but the camera’s dynamyc contrast kept fucking with me:

I had to fill the sleeves with empty bottles and kitchen paper rolls in order for the sleeves not to wrinkle much, LOL
I think that the fleece in my jacket closely resembles the density and texture the official one is supposed to have:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n4OIwmJqdqk/TzL4K1SnIrI/AAAAAAAAA7k/nb2n0ikj_wc/s1024/leon-proto-lc.jpg
I also found this picture with a detailed scheme for the UVW’s, but since it’s from the other pc version I don’t know if the UVWs wil match, or if it’ll be any useful:
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/690/jacketmaprk2.jpg
I think that the blurry stains and spots are cool to have too. Look at the area over the shoulderblades in my jacket. It got wet on a rainy day, so it kind of got those darker spots that aren’t that noticeable upclose, but thy really stand out from afar.
I’d like to give it a try later this weekend, so if you sent me the original texture to terminento2@yahoo.es I might give it a shot. Which resolution are you working with?
If you sent me the gloves textures that’d be cool too.
-Also, more references. The trucks are Opel Blitz:
http://www.lfs.lt/img/lib/opel-blitz%206649.jpg
Your textures for the truck are pretty good, and your wheelrims are great. but I think that the tires should be less uniform and dirtier. Wouldn’t be an issue most of the time, but since the wheel gets a close up shot it kind of stands out being so clean. Couldn’t find better pictures, but I think you get the idea:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c1/Opel_Blitz,_Museum_of_Retro_Cars.jpg
-One last thing, before you get to the castle, there are some paintings that I inmediately recognized.
-El Aguador de Sevilla, by Velazquez:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5f/El_aguador_de_Sevilla,_by_Diego_Vel%C3%A1zquez.jpg
-The school of Athens by Raphael:

-Primavera by Sandro Boticelli:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Botticelli-primavera.jpg
-The Milkmaid by Vermeer (just the face):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/Johannes_Vermeer_-_Het_melkmeisje_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg
-The Prophet Jeremiah by Rembradt:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RBcBXEmLuDA/TalTrgNVOSI/AAAAAAAAAY8/hbmT8O2QfNM/s1600/Rembrandt+Jeremiah+lamenting.jpg
-In the room after leon and ashley crash with the digger, there’s a mirrored painting of Neuschwanstein Castle:
http://www.amazingplacesonearth.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/NeuschwansteinCastle.jpg
I’m almost positive I saw this one: El Caballero de la Mano en el Pecho by El Greco:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/El_caballero_de_la_mano_en_el_pecho,_by_El_Greco,_from_Prado_in_Google_Earth.jpg/799px-El_caballero_de_la_mano_en_el_pecho,_by_El_Greco,_from_Prado_in_Google_Earth.jpg
I wasn’t able to recognize more of them, but I’m sure that any Arts History student will be able to point more of them out.
You’re awesome! Quick responses:
1. Re: the Jacket – thank you for all the reference shots! When I come back to the jacket (taking a break from it for now), I’ll go back to these photos (I saved them just in case you couldn’t keep them up online). Awesome cosplay, btw. π
2. Re: the truck – I agree the tires should be dirtier. I’ll go back to it before we finish the Village section. It won’t be hard to update (and you’re right – it’s especially important since it gets that close-up).
3. Re: the paintings – Thank you very much – not just for identifying them, but for finding pretty high resolution versions (I’ve saved these as well!) π
Thanks again!!
Thanks! I didn’t expect such a positive reaction from my crappy photos! π
If I happen to find further reference for any other thing, I’ll be sure to post it!
I’m kind in a rush right now, but I’ll post some pics later on.
Keep it up! You are making an amazing job!
Where do we download these? or are they unreleased?
These aren’t released yet because they’re not finished, sorry.
The jacket from the PS4 version now has a higher detail than those of the original UHD Edition for PC.

@termineto where did you see the milkmaid painting?
