Kitchen Nightmares (room 303)

This week I’m showing you a small, but really hard to re-create area of the game. This room is plenty of small details everywhere and every single texture was a bit of torture! They are all very particular and unique. Such a pity most of the hard work in this room cannot be reused anywhere else in the game! As usual, this is a work in progress (for example, some of the food labels and some notes are placeholders for now).

Originally I planned to show you this room (303) along with the next (304). However, I’m still working on 304 and I wanted to show you something before leaving to Cardiff. I’ll be doing photography at various castles in Wales for 5 days just for this project! Unfortunatelly, weather forecasts announce rain for all 5 days!! XD … Wish me luck!

Best of luck taking pictures of the source textures in Wales!

I really like how nasty the fermenting soup looks in your update. It grossed me out.

I never noticed how chessy the gloves and apron look though lol.

  2. Alvare says:

This sure looks like a lot of work to me.

    • Alvare says:

I made another donation of 10 bucks. The next few rooms are going to be hellish, I’m pretty sure they lack a lot of detail.

      • Cris says:

Thank you!! We really appreciate the support.

        • Alvare says:

          You’re welcome. 🙂
Just wanted to point out, I noticed some new things in the video after watching more closely.
Uv seam is apparent on the wall wire texture at 0:11
The broken concrete wall showing the brown bricks with holes in them at 1:02, you could move these metal cylinders to go out from them. Would support the texture more, I think.
Small face missing underneath the wood plank at 2:05.
You got your names on the chalkboard at 2:08. Don’t know who the third person is. 😛

          • albert says:

            Thank you Alvare!
The first and third… I saw both when capturing the video XD
I’m sure Cris will get rid of those things and much more in the next remastering stage 🙂
About the second suggestion… that’s a good idea!
            Haha those names are placeholders.

  3. carl says:

my god you people are simply astounding, literally every picture i was in awe of how detailed you have made it, including the 3D edits of those ghastly 2D textures, keep up the good work and show capcom how it should be done

  4. Grub says:

Wow. Is Wales actually a source for a lot of the textures?

  5. eduardo says:

even very good, much better than the pork service that capcom did.
Friend you are to be congratulated for the great work done.

  6. Frank Nitty says:

    Awesome work as usual

  7. Grub says:

Quick note — on the image full of pinned notes, the one in the center… I think it’s someone’s name.

Nick I~~~~. Last name seems Spanish in origin, but hard to say for sure.

    • Alvare says:

Yeah, noticed that one too. I’m fine with that btw. It’s fun that they add in their names.
Btw, are the credits of this game mod-able too? You could add in your names in there also.

    • albert says:

I don’t think it’s Spanish surname. At least, Nick is not a Spanish name. Not sure if placing there a “Paco García” would be a good choice 😛

First time commenting, but I look over these images/videos whenever I want to look at something awe-inspiring. The way you make this game look like it came from last year or something is something incredible.

The way that you take all of the short-cuts and mistakes and fix them all the while improving the look of this game to a degree I’ve never seen before.

The fact that the original devs put a series of pipes IN A FRIGGN’ WALL TEXTURE is utterly ridiculous, the work you put into making a 3D model of it puts you guys far and above Capcom.

The work is superhuman and I can only look on with awe.

  9. Caio says:

    Great work!

This game, if not my favorite, is for sure the one I have most played.
It will be an amazing experience play it again with those new textures/3d.

  10. TheManuel says:

    Astounding!

Someone has been “Cooking” in the Kitchen XD

I notice in Room 303B, the Bin looks odd. The “Back” of Bin should be FLAT,like an WALL.
Here is image to make clearer:

Keep on Cooking up great things albert & Cris :p

    • albert says:

Yes, that was on purpose too. The inner part of a container doesn’t have those stickers. That’s just for the front of a bin. I used a little portion of the texture with no text/stickers inside the container. I needed that border to avoid seams in the surface or a super streched texture. At the end, that border is a natural continuation af the borders you can see in the left, right and front faces of the bin 🙂

The models were restricted to the hardware limitations of those times (low poly count, very few textures for a lot of different elements, etc…) and sometimes you can clearly see some models were rushed and poorly polished. I think that sticker inside the bin was clearly a needed reuse of that texture because of those limitations.

So, sticking to the original design is not always the best idea.

At this point, I’m 90% of the times certain when something is design related or hardware-limitation related.

Thank you for your comment and don’t hesitate posting whatever you think is somewhat off. Maybe Cris will make that back side of the bin plain again using a bigger texture… Who knows! haha

  12. Kevin says:

Look at this, the food is fucking rotten you fucking donkeys!

    …i’ll see myself out

  13. Cris Without H says:

Hi. As you’ve mentioned, some of these food labels are placeholders. I’m not sure which ones, so I’d just like to point out that some of these look a little bit to bright and colorful for something that most likely is older than the RE4 itself by now.

    • albert says:

Yes, I agree, this is something we’ll improve in the next revision for this area 🙂

      • Cris Without H says:

I must say, I’m impressed with you guys. I’ve met some people who get a seizure at the slightest suggestion about their work ^^ I think it’s good that you care so much about people’s feedback while also being very professional. More professional than Capcom, I’d say. I wish they could offer you guys a job, so this project would get some financial support. Also, who knows, maybe it would be released on Steam as HD DLC? It happened to Skyrim.
