It’s Time We Go Home… (Room 330)

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since my last regular post. Well… I think this one won’t be all that “regular” either, but at least I’ll show you some new progress with the Island areas!

First of all, I wanted to share with you that I had surgery in my left eye a few days ago. It was nothing too serious: subcapsular cataracts. It’s a kind of cataract that affects even young people. Hey, but now I have a brand new crystalline! 🙂 My right eye received its surgery 3 years ago, and so I finally have complete cyborg vision haha.

And just in case someone is wondering, this disease is hereditary and wasn’t caused by straining my eyes too much. I’m saying this because a lot of people tell me: “This happened because you spend too many hours in front of the screen!!!”

It’s been really annoying to work with a “fog filter” during all this time but I fended for myself pretty well. Here’s a re-creation of how my vision was before the surgery:

Now everything looks so clean and contrasted…

The main post-operative impact is that I lost the capacity to focus, which means that for the rest of my life I’ll need to use glasses for short distance viewing, no matter what.

***

That said, here are some of the work-in-progress comparison shots for room 330. This room is not as terrible as 329 was, but I’m really happy this is the last area with lab equipment.

I’ve been able to locate some of the original source photography and machinery used in this stage, and this saved me some re-creation time.

About the 3D edits: Almost everything has been remapped / remodeled / touched up. I also added a pair of fluorescent tubes with their corresponding light and bloom effects because there were 2 light sources in the room coming from nowhere.

As usual, I hope you enjoy the work in progress pictures and video!

Amazing wrk and great progress yet again

  3. Pliskin says:

How fitting, you could say your vision got an HD remaster.

    • Cris says:

      I gotta admit, I laughed out loud… 🙂

    • MAGG says:

Hahaha I thought the same. I was like “I dont remember that area in the game”. Glad everything is better Albert (It would be cool if you had red eyes like Wesker). It makes me very happy when I see a new post. Your work is great.

    • albert says:

Hhah yes! In fact I see the game much better now to the point I say to myself: “Wow! we did a good job here!” XD

  4. Nelson says:

    • albert says:

      Muchas gracias a ti Nelson!
Sin duda ahora me resultará más fácil trabajar! Ya falta un poco menos… 🙂

I hope everything goes well with your new eye, my grandpa in Jamaica had a similar surgery several years ago. As far as the screenshots are concerned; one word, MASTERFUL.

  6. Cris Without H says:

I had a question about Leon’s face. Will you use real people as reference (such as the guy who played Leon in the movies) and go for a photorealistic look? I mean, I don’t know if a simple upscale will do, since he may end up looking like a beige wall. The hair texture you guys did for him looked nicely, but things like eyes and skin are a pain in the butt to do.

    • albert says:

We still don’t know what we’ll use as base to re-created character’s textures but the goal is the result looks as close as possible to the original but with no trace of blurriness of course, hehe

  7. Y.Z. says:

Will you eventually change/translate the “Plaga Elimination System” screen text during the cutscene to Spanish, if it’s at all possible?

    • albert says:

Yes, it’s possible! We’ll decide which’s the best option during the next revision stage because there are a lot of random small texts al over the screen 😉

      • Y.Z. says:

        Thanks for clarifying.

There’s also something else I’d like to ask regarding the project: Do you think you’ll be adding more “manual” polygon shadows to rooms that would benefit from it?

For example: The room with “It” (31b) and certain Castle rooms with your improved lighting would look a tad more “realistic” if you added more shadow polygons throughout them, to be honest. With 31b as it is, it looks more like a DOOM level with flatly “shaded” textures in what’s supposed to be a “dark” cave, while the latter improved Castle rooms can not only look too bright, but also feel like they have “unrealistic” lighting due to the way RE4’s engine (as a 6th Generation VG Console game engine) inherently works.

Here’s some quick mockup images I made of what I mean:

You don’t have to do ALL the rooms, of course; just the ones that look off.

        • albert says:

We’ve already added some shadows here and there so we’ll probably a few more. In the example you posted of Salazar robot there’s no need to add those shadows because there are light sources inside those 3-floor structures (the fire from the decorative torches).
Let’s see what’ we’ll do in that cave… but I have some ideas 🙂

Thank you for posting those images!

  8. Gabbernator says:

    Awesome, as always!

  9. aryan says:

would you think about improving character textures of leon and ada and other characters

  10. Guitar Player says:

    Good job

  11. BG says:

That thing on the top shelf next to the monitor in 330-I.jpg … is that a computer keyboard texture at the top of the stack? What’s going on there?

  12. Hello there!
I can´t thank you enough for your hard work and that you truly remastered my favourite game. I play it for 8 years now and can´t wait to play the real HD version of it, especially the castle.
I would like to ask, am I allowed to make a video of your HD Remaster? Of course I will give credit ^^

    • Cris says:

Hello! Thanks for the kind words and for reaching out. Please feel free to make a video of it and just make note of our project / site. Thanks again!

  13. Sophia Sparks says:

I see that you are heading near the end of the main campaign.

That remake is gonna be sweet as all hell!

With the recent videogame blunts, a good breath of fresh air is floating our way…

  14. isaac pavon says:

guys you’re doing an excellent job!

  15. John Long says:

Hi Albert, I’ve been following your work from the beginning and I’ll never stop being impressed by both the quality of your texture work and faithfulness to the original. As a pc gamer I have seen and installed countless texture packs, but none have even approached the quality seen in your work. This stuff is beyond most HD remasters, and the level of dedication is insane. Keep up the good work my man!

    • albert says:

Thank you John for your words! 🙂
We are doing our best and you can be sure we’ll continue until it’s finished!

  16. Mono says:

I can’t stop thinking about all the time you lost, the whole time it was your eyes ! the textures of the game were never all blurry, messy and low res, you can stop your hd recreation project now and breath my friend

  17. Literally Who says:

    >tfw albert managed to redo the textures for his own eyes just because he can
