Save/Load Typewriter Screen

Hello everyone! This is just a quick update.

I wanted to show you this work in progress save/load screen. I’ve re-created all the pieces but the platen knob with Photoshop. This one was re-created and animated in 3D.

I’ve been doing multiple minitasks all at the same time the last weeks. For example, I’m porting all hi-poly “examine” weapons models ingame, optimizing sub-screen item models and refining a few Village inaccuracies, etc…

    Fantastic work as usual
I have a suggestion though: could you make the text font…I don’t know… look more dirty/old to fit the mood?

    • Toni O. says:

Don’t know… If it would be paper as background, an old and dirty typewriter font surely would look nice.
But I’m not sure if it would look good on that stilistic typewriter-thing with the font being white.
However, the font could be a bit thinner.
It’s one of that rather ugly “console” like fonts, that’s easier to read on a low res screen.

  3. Ka-mook says:

You definitely should start patronait to finish project quicker.

  4. Steven says:

LEAVE NO TEXTURE UN-PIMPED. Thanks for pimping out the whole game! I really love it.

  5. Zoe says:

    So Good!!!

  6. sean says:

Just out of curiosity I was wondering if it is possible for you to modify the information displayed in the typewriter screen? like instead of the # of times saved I would rather know the # of times I have died, or my kill count… it sucks that the only time you see the kill % and death total is when you complete a certain section

    • sean says:

it would also be nice if the “You are dead screen” could have an additional option that allows players to go to the loading screen instead of having to choose continue or quit… because I dont ever hit continue I always load a saved game whenever I die because I dont like having the difficulty reduced when I play 🙂

      • sean says:

oh and thank you for your incredible work!

      • albert says:

I agree but again, we don’t know if this is possible/how to do it

        • sean says:

Just wanted to point out that somebody made a mod for RE4UHD that allows players to teleport to any room. Its a really cool mod, and maybe could be useful to you? Not sure if that mod has anything to do with the menu though, it works with a special in-game map but it would be cool if it could work within the menus

          • albert says:

Yep, it’s a room inside a preexistent room. Mr. Curious added to that room a lot of doors that “teleport” you to any other area of the game.

      • Zoe says:

Oh wow! I ended up watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFv6KAdQ5SE

Totally didn’t know about the adaptive difficulty of RE4, and I’ve beaten it at least 4 times across GC, Wii, and PC. Opened my eyes.

        • sean says:

I have seen that video and I must point out the narrator in that video did a very BAD job explaining how it works. That video makes it sound as if the game can get harder if you are playing good, but it does not get harder.

When you die, the game reduces the difficulty for the area you are in, once you pass that area it goes back to the difficulty you were playing on. If you are playing on Normal, it will never go above Normal it will only go to Easy for the area you have died in. If you play on Pro, it will never go above Pro. If you play on Easy the difficulty will not change at all, because the original Gamecube version did not allow players to choose Easy at the start of a new game.

Some people think playing on Normal is actually more difficult because the Ganados/zombies are less predictable. When playing on Pro if you run towards an enemy, they will begin to perform an attack very quickly, this allows players to easier dodge or fake out enemy movement. When playing on Normal the enemies are slower and will not always attack when you run, so you cannot perform quick fake/dodges as easily. Though, this is a minor detail 🙂

    • albert says:

That would be interesting info to display! but this is beyond our knowledge… 🙁

      • sean says:

well I understand if its not possible, but maybe when you are closer to finishing this project you will happen to find a way to make it happen! keep it in the back of your head just in case 🙂

        • albert says:

I will! There was a lot of things we thought it was impossible to edit (lights, effects, 3D models…) when we started this project after all.

          • sean says:

Thanks for the replies! I know your main goal is just the textures, and everything else is extra. But I really really hope that you find a way to modify the menus, someday 🙂 maybe its just my OCD but I feel like it would be a big improvement for the game to be able to see our kills/deaths somewhere besides the end of chapter screen (why do developers think we want to see # of saves instead of continues? lol)

Capcom should just give you the source code, then they should pay you to make a VR port (you know they want to)

          • sean says:

and by VR I mean your UHD mod + Wii controls + VR

  7. Karl says:

We as fans really are very lucky to have such dedicated and talented individuals pouring all the effort and hard work that you do into this beloved game. You’re all fantastic. Thank you, I (and I’m sure many others too), cannot wait to see the rejuvenated masterpiece when you have finished this labour of love.

  8. Frank Nitty says:

Damn, this is so freaking cool. By the looks of things u are leaving no rock left unturned. Awesome

  9. Henry says:

Wow, amazing that was the most irritating things in HD remaster for me. Blurry resized typewriter texture

  10. BG says:

Nice. Are the numbers on the ruler at the bottom upside-down in the original version? lol

  11. Cris Without H says:

I’d say the new one looks too… hmmm… it’s hard to find the right word. The borders on all the parts are too prominent, giving it a slightly cartoonish look. But other than the outlines, it’s nice.

  12. Zoe says:

IDK the font looks fine to me.

  13. GeorgeLincolnRockwell says:

Thank you for this. The typewriter always looked out out place in the hd version with it being so low res.

  14. John Long says:

Albert, I’m so excited to see you’re finishing up with your environmental work. You texture and model edits are beyond professional, and I’m eagerly anticipating seeing how you update the character models.

As a side question, how do you manage to create such beautiful HD textures when you don’t have a photo source to work on? Most HD texture mods just upscale the texture, apply some filters and add some grainy overlays. Your textures however are so accurate to the original without losing clarity. Any chance you might give us a peek at your work flow?

    • albert says:

      Thank your for your message!
As Alvare said, It’s briefly explained in the FAQ but as addition to that I must say it’s as tedious work as it seems: Dozens and dozens of Photosop layers and colour/brightness adjustments for a single texture using new source pictures.

“Humm I’ll take that portion of rust of this picture… and this shiny plate from this other… and that metal rivet from that other picture… and that dented surface will be a nice addition to get the original texture feeling… and that worn border matches perfectly for the lower corner of the texture… ahh! finally! the doorknob model I’ve been searching for during one day!” 38 additional layers later… “I think I got it!”
And this is the history for most textures we didn’t found the original source XD

But the others are not much easier. There’s a long way from one of the pictures I took from the original location until we get the final result. It’s required a lot of adjustments to match the original texture.

  15. aymj says:

    Amazing.

  16. kaludio says:

wow the textures look exactly like the originals, i’m really astonished with the fidelity to the source material. Its one of first thing that i noticed playing thru the vanilla hd pc remake. I remember thinking “uugghh! the menu look better on dolphin”. That reminds me, do you guys also miss the old red pause menu background? I mean the guys at Qloc did a good job recreating the mood of the texture, but to someone like me that has played the original game countless times it it stands out like a sore thumb xD

  17. Yop says:

      Saludos!

  19. Cris Without H says:

I think you guys need to work on proportions in this one. Some things appear too small or too big.

    • sean says:

can you be more specific about what “things” appear small or big?

      • Cris Without H says:

That’s hard to do, because I wouldn’t know the names of all these elements in my native tongue, let alone in English. And being like “this piece of metal” would be pointless. When you compare the two, it’s easy to see what is too big and what is too small, though.

        • Cris says:

I struggle to identify what parts you’re referencing, I’m sorry. 🙁 Could you use the Snipping Tool in Windows to capture a screenshot and circle the parts you’re referencing?

  20. JulioR3 says:

I love your awesome work! great job! and will this really awesome work release soon?

    • Cris says:

We don’t have a completion date yet — simply continuing to work on the project as we are able to. Thank you for the encouragement!

  21. Guitar Player says:

I think the fonts are perfect, no need to add some badass fonts on the typewriter.
We’re not playing Colin Mcrae or trialHD.
    This is Resident Evil..
