I need some help to identify something! (Result screen image)

Hello! I was about to re-create the background image of the Result screen, but I’ve run into an item that I can’t identify…

UPDATE: Thank you everyone! You’ve helped me a lot. Based on all the info I reached the conclusion this is a badge holder with a thin cord and the metal piece at the bottom is a zipper. Something like this:

It seems some kind of wallet… but there’s some kind of black thread under that. (Remember the year is 2004. So, I don’t think it’s an iPhone with its earpods XD)

Also, is someone able to recognize the “Intelligence Report text? I can see a lot of words but since English in not my native language as you can imagine, I can’t identify some of them.

This is the highest resolution available

UPDATE: Thank you again! It seems “Project Umbrella” people already transcribed it some time ago and this is what they got:

http://projectumbrella.net/forum/Leon-Report

Also, Jazz / Kaz did the same work with incredible results:

«Note: parentheses mean that the words are partially cut off or hidden. Also, the report has some incorrect words or odd grammar, courtesy of the big C.»

We were successful of rescuing Ashley Graham the president’s
daughter. She was captured by some kind of religious group,
calling themself “ILLUMINADOS”. It turned out to be more a like
terrorist group. All of them were eliminated by this mission but few things
still remains unclear.
One thing is that all believers of this cult religious group has been
injected with some kind of parasites. Details on this parasite is still
(under) investigation.a
(They) had help from an unknown authority or grape of intelligence
(could) be corrupted remnants of Umbrella Corp, or grape of
(people.) They are attempting to gather samples of the unknown
(parasite.) They’ve been careful about acquirement of this
(so far.) Secured lots of research as evidence to show
It turns out that Jack Krauser was the guy who was
operative. He was immediately out of our investigation
Leon Scott Kennedy
(9?) 17, 2004

And finally, EPD Gaffney, generated an understandable English version:

«Going by what Kaz/Jazz transcribed, I rewrote the document in a way that sounded more like a formal report and actually makes sense. I did my best to preserve the sentiment of the original however. It’s significantly wordier than the original but the original quite honestly doesn’t make sense as a report of any kind. Because this is a texture for a document that was never meant to be read anyway […]»:

We succeeded in rescuing mission target Ashley Graham, daughter of President Graham. She had been captured by a clandestine religious cult, calling themselves “LOS ILLUMINADOS”. They operated in a manner similar to that of a terrorist organisation. During the course of this mission, current intelligence indicates they have been thoroughly eliminated.
Points of Interest:
All members of LOS ILLUMINADOS were injected with a parasite unfamiliar to our agency, a potentially dangerous weapon whose application may extend so far as thought manipulation. Further details on this parasite remain unknown, though an investigation is underway.
LOS ILLUMINADOS received aid from an unknown authority or group of intelligence. There is evidence this entity may be composed of remnants of Umbrella Corp. The goal of this entity appears to be the acquisition of samples of the aforesaid parasite.
We have identified Jack Krauser as the operative acting on behalf of the unknown intelligence group mentioned above. Krauser proved to be an obstacle in fulfilling the duties of the mission and was necessarily eliminated.

As a side note (I take the opportunity to show you something new), ALL special weapon screens are 100% remastered ;D

What dyou need that for? Goin’ huntin’ an elephant?

And also the ending sequence!

Thank you in advance and have a nice day!

Hi albert! I think that the object seems to be a black notepad of sorts (I assume because there is a pen right beside it). I will look at the text later when I am on desktop for clearer view and write down what I can see

  2. Killerbee256 says:

Maybe some type of pager? Or maybe Leon’s badge?

  3. Jonathan says:

i Think it’s a Wallet or a Badge (Badges can be used as a wallet??)

  4. Carson says:

I think it’s a black cover of like an ID badge, probably flips open to reveal Leon’s picture and D.S.O Status. Hard to tell for sure though.

  5. Dave says:

It definitely looks like it’s made of leather with stitching around the edges. Not sure what it is exactly though.

  6. Carlos says:

It seems to be a notebook, beside the pen.

  7. Sam says:

The object looks like a leather badge holder of some kind. I’m not sure what the metallic clip on the bottom is; perhaps something that would attach the holder to a belt?

Some of the text in the report is legible. I can see:
We were successful [?] rescuing Ashley Graham the president’s daughter…
…by some kind of cult religious group calling [?] “ILLUMINADOS”.
It turns out to be more a like [?] terrorist…
…by this mission but few things

There are more individual words I could see, like “Jack Krauser” and that it is signed “Leon Scott Kennedy [?] 2004”

I’m by no means an OCR expert, but maybe someone with more skills in that area could help

  8. Sascha Hohlmann says:

Hy Albert, huge fan of the work from you guys!
I am pretty sure that the “bag” is the pouch Leon uses for his earpiece (the one he used in the sequence with Mike). The wires could be from a battery inside the pocket, so the earpiece wont run out of charge if not used. Or at least this would be the most logical explanation from my view.

As for the text, i will take a look at it tomorrow and if no one has already written the answer I will gladly try to decipher it.

    Hope i could help 🙂

    Stay awesome!

  9. Adrian says:

What I find more interesting is the metal frame on the other side. Makes me think that it is a key or badge wallet (badge makes particular sense, since the other times are CIA-type stuff). The thread could just be part of the seam being pulled out, implying that it is well used.
An image search didn’t pull up a matching key/badge wallet though.

  10. Michael Scott Inglish says:

I think the black wallet looking think is a FBI badge/badge holder

  11. hobbes_182 says:

    Hey Albert!

Do you have a larger screenshot of the Intelligence Report text? I see the one you uploaded is 640*360.

I am bilingual (English/Español), I might be able to help

  12. EPD Gaffney says:

Any chance of a higher-resolution image to look at for the words (and without the red circle)? I think the object is a badge or small, leather notepad, though I’m leaning towards a notepad.

Regarding the words, from what I can make out, it’s actually close to gibberish. It’s rather broken English that I don’t think was ever intended to be read. I’m working out deciphering it anyway, but it was clearly not supposed to be readable, so if you take some liberties with it, I don’t think it will be the end of the world.

The new screens are looking great.

I updated the post with the original image. It’s no higher-rse though…
      https://www.re4hd.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/0017-original.png

      Thanks!
Yeah that’s probably the case… as long as it preserves the recognizable words and it looks like an actual intelligence report it would be enough ;D

      • EPD Gaffney says:

Kaz’s transcript is great. That should give you an idea of what to type in for the retexture. However, as you can see, it’s grammatically quite unprofessional and would need to be rewritten anyway if you want it to be legible in your texture, as it will just look ridiculous otherwise. If you want any help with that, I do this sort of thing a lot, so just let me know.

        • albert says:

Yeah, it will definitely need an “Engrish to English” translation haha

          I’d really appreciate it!
As I said, any kind of text that includes the “deciphered” words and the overall idea, but in proper English, of course

Thanks thanks thanks a lot to everyone!!

Because this is a texture for a document that was never meant to be read anyway, my thinking was, if it’s too long and cuts off, or part of my text needs to be removed (to fit Len’s signature), there’s no harm in it.

Let me know if you want me to change anything:

Busca en Google “porta gafete de piel/cuero” y verás que son bastante similares, incluso tiene sentido el cordón que tiene detrás, ya que en teoría debería llevarlo colgando, espero que te sea de ayuda Albert, mucha suerte y ánimo, que ansias D:

  15. Ed says:

I definitely think it’s a badge holder and not a notebook (it’s too thin to be a notebook). Similar to other end screens where they show papers, gun and badge. The pen is probably for signing the paperwork and the string to wear the badge as a necklace.

  16. Kaz says:

Hello again! Here’s my rough shot at figuring out what the “Investigation Report” says:

We were successful of rescuing Ashley Graham the president’s
daughter. She was captured by some kind of religious group,

    (9?) 17, 2004

NOTE: parentheses indicate words that are partially cut off or hidden, and the text has some of that messy early Capcom localization grammar in it’s English.

    Hope this helps!

    • Tony B says:

Great work Kaz, this is the best transcript so far. Now the question is to leave it as is or to fix the grammar. I think the grammar should be corrected, because I don’t think it’s realistic for Leon who is a American born and an educated special agent to have a bad grasp of written English.

    • EPD Gaffney says:

Whoa, that’s amazing. I have no idea how you were able to work out all these words. I tried a lot and got nowhere near this. Fantastic.

    • Xuru says:

Wow, what an amazing job! How could you even read most of that?
Also, pretty sure it says “group” and not “grape”.

    • V I D A L says:

This seems very accurate. Can’t get any better than that… and there is no need to make the txt more professional and well written like EPD Gaffney did. This report being written by Leon is more believable if it’s sloppy and informal. It’s just a report, not a work of a professional writer and authenticity to the original game is what this project is all about. Great job.

      • EPD Gaffney says:

Two things. First, when in your professional life and in your everyday life, you do not speak or write the same. It’s called code-switching. Second, the text being completely unreadable is actually authentic to the original game. You can tell it was not intended to be readable because it’s not just informal, but the English of someone that didn’t have great familiarity with the language. Which obviously wouldn’t be accurate for Leon.

So we’re faced with the question of how to HD this image and account for the fact that the text was never meant to be read but that there is text in the image. The most obvious solution to me is to make the text work, unless you just blur the entire thing out of focus, but I don’t think anyone wants that.

Now, if you have specific suggestions on my offer for the text, go for it. It’s not 100% perfect, so maybe you can improve it.

    • V I D A L says:

This seems very accurate. Great job.

    • V I D A L says:

That looks very accurate. Can’t get more authentic than that.
The only liberty I would take is “We were successful in rescuing” instead of “We were successful of rescuing “

Hey Albert, the black rectangle sort of looks like an old case for a Blackberry phone? But it has that metal hinge at the bottom, so I don’t know what it could be. Here’s an image of an old Blackberry case:
    https://www.maxbhi.com/images/detailed/2005/flip_cover_for_blackberry_classic_q20_black_by_maxbhi.com_95771.jpg

As for the report, here’s what I can make out (the English in the report itself is not very good and I had to guess on some of it):
    REPRODUCTION PROHIBITED
    SECRET

    Intelligence Report

    Rescue mission of president’s daughter:

We were successful of rescuing Ashley Graham the presidents daughter being held by some kind of religious group calling themselves the “Los Illuminados”. It turned out to be more like a terrorist group however. Group cult members by this mission but few things remain unknown.

The rest of the report is incredibly hard to read, unfortunately, because the texture for it is so low resolution. Some words stand out like “religious group” and “unknown assailants” and at the very bottom it says “Leon Scott Kennedy”.
That’s all I was able to get out of it, sorry.

  19. Andrew says:

Perhaps a clip on badge like this since the bottom looks like a metal clip and it’s not present on his outfit? Seems doubtful outside of it being Leon holding on to a memento with his S.T.A.R.S. badge on his person tucked away in his pocket as it was his first and last day on the job that night in Raccoon City lol. Could explain the string as well like some ID card on a person’s shirt pocket that retracts when pulled forward. Google search came up with this ID being based off of Terminator’s shown in the second pic

As to the text, I can make out this and will do ellipses wherever there are words indiscernible to me as well. This how it seems to read (grammatical errors be on Capcom like presidents instead of president’s xD)

    Intelligence Report

    Rescue Mission of presidents daughter:

… were successful of … Ashley Graham the presidents
daughter… by some kind of cult religious group
calling (UNDER STAMP and Red Outline) themselves “llluminados”. It turned out to be more a like
… terrorist group. G… ed by this… but fear things

…at off be… religious group has been
    … kind of… this… still

    … unknown… intelligence
… remnants of (UNDER STAMP) Umbrella Corp. … of
    … gather samples of…

(UNDER STAMP) … Jack Krauser …

    Leon Scott Kennedy
    … 2004

Would think it would read “We were unsuccessful of rescuing Ashley Graham..” but it looks like successful; as well as: It turned out to be more a like a terrorist group; the red outline was in the way, so that was my best guess and it would sound more natural as “more like a terrorist group.” The spacing under the wallet/badge looks only like it could fit “a” with “a like a terrorist group” sounding like bad translation or something. Any chance of uploading a bigger picture without the red outline so we-the community-can do our best as to making heads or tails of this?

    • albert says:

I think we’ve almost got it!
It seems the typical “Engrish” Japanese developers used back in the day, so the text will need to be converted to “proper English”, because now it will be fully readable XD
      Thanks a lot!!

      • Gamer says:

Yeah, at least you got a good idea of what to write, even if not 100% accurate. And correcting the grammar is a good idea also.

Suggested corrected version based on Kaz’ incredible recovery following these rules:
    1. Less words vs. more words, i.e. remove to preserve vs. add.
    2. Attempt to make a more natural English. However, it doesn’t read like any of the intelligence briefs I have ever read, but I am sure we all want to try to preserve the original.

    • Lucifronz says:

Ohh, this text is from the very end of the game? I haven’t replayed RE4 in a while and I thought this was just the text you saw at the end of each level or something. My comment about them knowing about the virus ahead of time is irrelevant then.

      • Gamer says:

Seems the writing suggests Saddler was working with Umbrella ( Iam guessing the Umbrella remnants being Wesker ). I was thinking he had already left Umbrella before RE4 and was there simply to get a sample of it.

Although I guess it makes sense that it wasnt Saddler doing everything.

  28. Lucifronz says:

Highly unlikely, but it almost looks like a coin purse laying upside-down. The ones with a metal clip and a soft pouch.

As for the text, it’d be very hard to read from these images, but I’ll give it the best shot I can (anything in brackets is nonsense I can’t translate into a sensible word from context and/or my best guess):

“We were successful at [reawing] Ashley Graham the president’s daughter [has been captured by] some kind of cult religious group [calling themselves]… it turned out to be more [alike] [a] terrorist group … by this mission but few things… remains…”

The words “a like” or “alike” seem to almost certainly be the word(s) they filled in there, so I think some of this is… kind of… bad English (it’s not wrong, I think to say “more alike a terrorist group” but it comes off very weird even in a formal report). This is a Japanese title and this is a filler background, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re not meant to completely read it, therefore bad English could easily have slipped through without anyone noticing or caring, though it’s very hard to tell with the text in the way and the lower resolution of the image. I have to use another image up close where I can to read more of it and it’s not much better.

    “…that all… cult religious group has been… [kind] of… parasite [is] [still]…”

    “…unknown… intelligence… remnants of Umbrella Corp or… of… gather samples… about… an…”

It just gets too hard to read the of this from this image and the other I found online alone with the “Reproduction Prohibited” stamp over everything. Especially as the other image I found has too much text over top of it to see the rest of the bits from it.

Hope that helps. Maybe someone can get a clearer look at it and tell you more. Seems like the text suggested they already knew about the parasite, so it’s somewhat surprising Leon didn’t know about it when he arrived, or didn’t seem to. Then again, I don’t think anyone was expecting the end of the mission results screen’s background flavor text to be an accurate representation of the video game’s lore.

  29. Sergey Tokarev says:

This page doesn’t display on a main site page, only saw it because of email. I think you should make it public. As for that black thing, seems like some sort of device… his portable ‘walkie-talkie’ perhaps? As for text, maybe you can post an unedited image without drawn stuff over it?)

    • albert says:

The unedited image is also posted. Can’t you see it? Maybe you need to refresh the browser
      The post is public. It’s strange… I’ll take a look…
      Thanks for the heads up!!

  30. Wyatt Grossman says:

I’m pretty sure that image is a Leather Police Badge holder. Leon used to be with the RPD so maybe that’s his old flip-out leather Badge Holder.

Id be happy to transcribe the full report as well as the text around it, the only text I cant immediately recognize is at the top beside the pistol and the small text above the highest paper clip.

  37. ronalddump says:

It honestly looks like a badge holder. Also, if you’re talking about the small text I can recognize most of the text even zoomed in at 640×360, but it would of course be helpful to have a cleared image and if possible one that is of larger resolution.

  38. metroidguy says:

looks like a tag of some sort. Or a wallet with loose threads

  39. Alvaro says:

parece la punta del cinturón de león, parece que la parte de metal es el lazo

    Excellent work as always!!

  41. Eric Jorgensen says:

I think the leather item is a badge holder. Somewhat similar to this: https://sgaus.org/product/rothco-universal-leather-badge-id-holder/

  42. Pablo says:

    Hi Albert

That black threads are the cord of a cross necklace. I’m not sure why would it be there, tho…

I think that’s something else. It’s too small compared to the bullets, for example.
It’s probably an optical illusion. After all, a cross is a really simple and really easy to create shape.
      thanks!

Albert, la foto de la handcannon en el arma la parte de las letras estan al reves

  45. Duder says:

I’d say it’s a notebook rather than a badge holder. The metal clip at the bottom is the thing the pen clips onto.

  46. Wolf says:

There are probably more than enough comments of individuals that have observed the image closely already, but I still would like to give an attempt myself. For the object in the image, I believe that without a doubt, it is a wallet/badge holder. I was not able to find the most suitable reference that matched completely, but if you zoom in and look closely at the object in the RE4 image, you can spot the stitched fabric line near the edges. The image may be quite grainy, but this detail can still be noticed if you gaze more in the direction where light touches the top-end portion of the object. Also, the fabric string attached rests next to it. Furthermore, there appears to be a black button to indicate the badge holder snaps closed. The whole object is rectangle in shape, which is similar to wallets and badge holders in particular.

As for the text on that document, this is more of a challenge due to the blur and grain of the low resolution, but I can make out the text Vykhodzev has mentioned earlier in the comments.

    Hey buddy!
I’ve taken a close look and I noticed two things.
The thread you mentioned has a cross at it’s end. (Take a close look with black and white filter with windows image editor or photoshop or something), and it’s connected to this wallet thing.
Now the wallet is either a badge holder or a notepad holder. It’s likely a notepad holder cause at the bottom there is an iron holder thing attached to it.
I don’t thing this wallet thing can be opened. the reason is the silver pin at the top. Now behind this silver pin is the thread with the cross. This pin holds the thread with the cross.
That’s all I can tell by zooming in and out and using some filters.
And I was wondering why it’s a big deal. I’ll send you a picture of my wallet that you can replace. 😉

I agree. I’m a bit disappointed Albert ended up using the re-written txt instead of the authentic one.. especially considering that the purpose of this mod is to stay authentic. Someone had posted an pretty accurate txt of the letter. The new one may be more well written, but it’s not what it was in the game.

    Albert bro

So does this mean we’re getting closer to a finished project?! I’m ready to throw some money at you for your hard work.
