Walkthrough | The Final Chapter Fully Remastered

Hello everyone! Finally, the final chapter is here!!

I’ve been dealing with countless small visual issues everywhere this last month. All of them minimal, but time consuming!

They were mostly related to effects appearing briefly during the cutscenes…

I also spent a lot of hours remastering the end credits video. And this leads me to ask you something. Could you check the first 5 min of the video? I’m asking for some help, because I want to edit a .dll file that allows the game to load HD videos, and I’d like to optimize it. Unfortunately, The creator of the .dll doesn’t respond my emails.

If we can’t edit that .dll file it will be a pain to properly play HD video files without suffering from some side effects…

These are the differences compared to the pack we released on 2018:

  • Adjusted, improved and new lighting and effects.
  • Re-created and restored some textures.
  • A lot of small stage model edits.
  • New and improved stage shadows where needed.
  • Remastered Files and Chapter End background images.
  • Remastered enemies textures and some slight 3D edits.

Like in the previous chapter, here’s a side by side comparison between PS4 and this HD remaster project that allows us to clearly see the missing effects and some new/improved effects

    Hey Albert, just watched the full video. Just want to say thank you so much for dedicating your time, passion, and effort into this project. It seriously looks absolutely beautiful in every possible way.

    Yet again, you have absolutely captured my favorite character in amazing quality. Going back I have to say your eye for detail and attention towards fabrics and patterns is seriously impressive. Saddler looks wonderful and regal and you bring him absolute justice. Soooo much better than the Gamecube version! Salazar, Mendez, and the other villians all look spectacular as well!

    All and all I’m very glad to see the final chapter be completed. I’m sure its a very big relief to have it finally finished after so long. Hopefully you are super proud of the work you’ve done. How do you feel about the bulk of the mod finally being completed?

    Looking forward to see whats next to come in regards to mercenaries and seperate ways, etc.

    Wow Saddler se ve increible y ni que hablar de los ojos super realista , aún falta para que el proycto este finalizado, pero cada vez falta menos en todos estos años que lo eh seguido simplemente me lleno de más Hype.

    Sobre el DLL creo que Mr.Curious puede ayudarte con ello pero no estoy seguro, no se nada de DLL si no apoyaba con eso u_u

    Por cierto como sugerencia a modo de extra crees que es posible re-hacer el cover original de game cube para la librería de steam?

    Fantástico trabajo, Albert! Yo simplemente señalaría que las texturas de Saddler/monstruo me parecen un poco más luminosas o blancas que las originales (como si hubiera un filtro de sharpening), supongo que por la mayor resolución de la imagen o el mayor detalle del modelo. Creo que quedarían mejor y serían más fieles al original si fueran un poco más oscuras o tuvieran sombras más acentuadas, para dar más volumen a los miembros del bicho.

    Qué ganas de que saques la versión definitiva!

    Gran trabajo como siempre Albert! Es impresionante la calidad y la inmersión que se consigue en el escenario de la batalla final contra Saddler gracias a los arreglos hechos tanto a los modelos como a las sombras, y la restauración/mejora de los efectos!

    Como tema aparte, estuve jugando con la versión de 2018 (como vengo haciendo desde que la publicaron XD) y noté que en ciertos momento el efecto del destello de la luz del helicóptero de Mike desaparece, como si renderizara solo si se lo mira desde dentro de determinados polígonos: https://mega.nz/file/bd1GiaKJ#KQRJ5bZ64KcRXZPbf0L4x3Mwz_lqkAYTPeInRmBefEk (Por cierto es un bug muy común en motores de la época, pero sería genial si se pudiera hacer algo al respecto)

    Y ya que eventualmente empezarás a trabajar con Los Mercenarios, al elegir la variante de Leon con chaqueta, estando en el inventario se ve que los polígonos de la parte inferior de su chaqueta se meten dentro del pantalón, este bug también está presente en la campaña: https://mega.nz/file/rZs3RYZa#JxIwYpJXq07ggce3r6Tx0iKRpHYx_y8pA4ajPOSBsmQ

    Seguiré jugando y si encuentro algún otro bug que no hayas notado (o que no recuerde que hayas cubierto) te lo haré saber.

      Esos fallos con los destellos (junto a otros, como que simplemente desaparecen) a mí me ocurren cuando minimizo el juego para ir a otro programa y luego vuelvo a la partida. A veces se soluciona volviendo a cambiar de ventana y volver al juego unas cuantas veces. O si no, cerrando el juego y volviendo a empezar.

      Lo de la chaqueta es un “fallo” sin solución. El motivo es que dentro del inventario las físicas del juego están desactivadas. Todo aquello que es afectado por el peso y el viento se queda en estado rígido
      Lo mismo pasa con el lazo del cuello de Ada. Queda dentro de su espalda totalmente rígido y no se ve.

      Oh bueno, gracias por las aclaraciones, ahora que lo pienso la gamebar de Windows 10 suele hacer que algunas apps queden en segundo plano, seguramente eso fue lo que generó el bug.
      En cuanto a las físicas, tiene bastante sentido viendo que la espalda de Leon está ligeramente curvada hacia adelante y la campera en lugar de caer sigue la dirección “diagonal” de la parte superior de su torso.
      En todo caso, siempre pensé que las animaciones eran más bien precargadas, algo así como que la animación de Ada corriendo incluía el movimiento del lazo y al frenar se activa una animación en la que ese lazo parezca “rebotar” en su espalda, dando una sensación de interacción sin recurrir realmente a las físicas jaja

      The PC version is not the original either.

      – The PC port was done based on the X360 port
      – The X360 (and PS3) port was based on the Wii port
      – The Wii port was based on the PS2 port but restoring most (not all) the Gamecube assets

    So this is the final version of the mod? Will there still be fixes for Ada’s Separate Ways/Assignment Ada and Mercenaries?

    Amazing work!!! This is how you remaster a game Capcom. It’s just a shame that there are reports that Capcom plans on remaking RE4 rather than Code Veronica and Dino Crisis 1/2.

    At least we have yours!!!!

    Also, if we try to install some texture mods (character skins/weapon skins/sounds etc). This should still be compatible right? Since these are just textures and not conflicted with other things?

      Actually Capcom is developing RE4 Remake since 2018, even its assets were leaked recently.
      About the mod compatibility, I tried installing some hi-poly and improved textures for Leon and Ashley with the 2018 release, and the game crashes at certain conditions, so I don’t think it will work fine with other mods…

        Hello!
        Some mods are not compatible because they replace some files we’ve modded.
        Our modded files include some extra textures and if you replace them with the original pack files that doesn’t include the new textures the game will crash when it doesn’t find them
        So, some mods need to be re-created by just including the missing textures inside their .pack files and that’s it. This is the only problem

        It would be a good idea to ask the mod creators to do a compatible patch of their mods once the HD project is complete. After all, most of the incompatibility issues are just caused by the absence of our new textures inside the 07000000.pack file

      Yes, I still have to do the final revision to all the minigames ;D

      Any mod that includes the 07000000.pack file needs to be adapted to this HD remaster.
      Our 07000000.pack file includes new extra textures. If you replace it with a modded versions based on the original 07000000.pack file (without our new additional textures) the game will crash ;D
      It would be a good idea to ask the mods’ creators to do it once the project is fully completed

      Yeah, such a shame, RE4 is already great as it is, and with this project takes it to a new level of polishment. I’d rather have, as you said, remakes of CV and Dino Crisis.

      RE4 can wait another console generation, I love it the way it is. Just need to get a new PC so I can replay it with this awesome HD pack

    FTI, This project is approx still 6 months away from a full release.

    There are still more edits to do to mercs, separate ways and other small stuff.
    Plus he needs to thoroughly test the work to find any issues before release.

      Maybe a new seperate post can be made on an approximate release for the final pack, or a PSA that there is no 100% date on release, that way commenters don’t keep continuously asking Albert on when the release is? If they don’t watch the entire video or read the description, etc. Seems to be the same people every post. Just so Albert isnt too bothered by it?

    Albert no se si sea mucho pedir pero podrias cambiar la textura de la cinta que sujeta al portacuchillo de Leon por algo mas acorde con el material? … la verdad es que como que no va! y viendo lo que hicieron con la version de ps4 a mi parecer se ve mil veces mejor…

          Ahhh vale. Lo que pasa es que lo que lleva Leon (y Krauser para su cuchillo también y Hunk para la radio) son apaños caseros para poder tener esos accesorios a mano. No se trata de una cinta que lleve la pistolera de por sí, si no que se lo han hecho ellos mismos. Por esos tiene ese aspecto tan “chapuza”, porque es una manualidad.
          Queda muy bien, pero si hiciera este cambio le estaría rediseñando el atuendo XD

    El otro día viendo unos dvd-r que tenia guardados encontré uno con varios mods para el re4 de ubisoft/sourcenext y allí estaba el albert texture patch 2.0 jeje. Vaya recorrido desde aquel entonces hasta aqui. Tienes un talento y un ojo increible para estas cosas tio, completamente envidiable.

    Que tengas un feliz 2021 albert! Y todavia quisiera ver ese mapa beta que habías encontrado en el capitulo anterior.

    The only thing I noticed that looked a bit off were Hunnigan’s expressions and the eyes of Leon, Ada, and Ashley. They looked very ‘reflective’ Almost like they were shining from non-existent light sources.
    I won’t ask when you’re going to finish but will instead congratulate you on getting this far, this project is probably the best fan project I’ve seen for a game.

        The problem is her face without the glasses. The facial animations during the radio scenes are more simple than the ones during cutscenes. The eye and smile movements suffer from that simplicity, and it makes she looks… scary XD
        I tried to optimize it by manually hex-editing a couple of vertices of the eyelids (I can’t freely edit her face geometry without completely messing the facial animation)

    I spotted in video date of creation dinput8.dll is (11/09/2018), latest version of this .dll file is 03/05/2019 changelogs claims they have made some optimizations you can download the latest version of companion .dll in this link: https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil4/mods/32
    maybe this is able to help in your loading optimisations

    As i understand you need code “cleanup” from dll and make her two exactly things. Enable you make HD Videos cutscenes and fix broken hair animations on Leon’s tactical vest model, right? We need these two fixes or .dll have some else to help as fix other problems?

        Oh it’s effect is hardly noticeable at all really, try enhancing it to a more noticeable level please & test how far to push it? Also About Saddler in the cutscenes before he transformed into that final boss monster? That dark black hole between Saddlers neck & collar is still very odd. It looks like it should be upper chest skin there or a clothing texture but instead it’s just a a large triangular black hole…

    Apologies if you have already addressed this previously, but I’ve noticed an issue in the newer versions of the game where the music cuts out abruptly once you kill the last enemy in an area, rather than fading out naturally like it does in the Gamecube version. Is this something you are aware of, and if so do you intend to fix it?

      Oh really? I never noticed that. Anyway I can’t change the sound behavior. That’s related to how the game is coded and that’s beyond our knowledge…

      Creo que no he entendido bien lo que dices.
      En cualquier caso, la versión que estás disponible ahora es del 2018.
      Cuando termine de remasterizar los juegos extra y otros detalles prepararé el pack final, pero aún faltan unos meses.

    Parece mentira que estemos tan cerca de poder jugar este maravilloso remaster.
    Me he fijado al final en la escena cuando Ashley se cae al agua hay un detalle que podria quedar muy bien y es añadir mas specularidad a Ashley cuando se cae al agua, para que parezca que esta mojada. Tu crees que es posible de hacer?

      Gracias!
      Por desgracia eso es imposible.
      Se pueden añadir efectos especulares simples y seguro que alguno le quedaría bien, pero es imposible decirle al juego que active y desactive esos efectos cuando yo quiera. Un modelo 3D o tiene efecto especular o no lo tiene, pero no puede activarse y desactivarse.
      Lo que se puede hacer en este juego es muy muy limitado.

      En cuanto a sonidos estoy arreglando algún bug que había (algún sonido desaparecido o incorrecto y alguno que sonaba en bucle de manera infinita) pero salvo eso no hay mucho más que yo pueda hacer. A menos que contrate a la gente que puso las voces a los ganados y les haga repetir las frases para que tengan más calidad XD
      En “Separate Ways” hay algunos sonidos que suenan en peor calidad porque provienen de la versión de PS2. Esos los reemplazaré por los de mayor calidad que aparecen en otros momentos del juego

        Buah, lo que daría yo por poder volver a grabar los sonidos con los actores originales jajaja… No, me refería precisamente a eso que comentabas de ciertos sonidos que suenan peor porque han sido portados de una u otra de las mil versiones del juego que han ido sacando a lo largo de los años. En cuanto a la banda sonora, no se en que calidad estará (muy mala no será, porque jugando nunca me lo ha parecido), pero si necesitaras material o algo, yo tengo la original que salio en su día en CD. Lo que sea para aportar granitos de arena al proyecto. Pasa buenos reyes!!

    Hello, I did noticed a bug in mercenary for some reasons on the most upper platform I can’t go down even with prompt with Wesker (maybe other characters), is this a unvolountarily bug caused by the patch? Can you fix this evne if not?

      This is the first time I hear about this issue. This project files doesn’t change the behavior of the game. So I don’t know what could cause that problem in your game.
      Which version of the game are you using? (1.0.6?) Are you using some other mods? Any trainer is activated?
      Which Mercenaries stage cause this problem? What’s the EXACT location of the problem?

    My issue happens when you’re in the WaterWorld Map with Wesker on the most uppser ladder platform basically even with prompted to go down by the game….you actually don’t go down on any Xbox controller even if you spam the GO DOWN Button, I also noticed the game in specific maps got really weird controls behaviour and sometimes locks your aim out like the village area with the first outside head plaga

      Next release wil be the “Final” release in around 6 months time I would guess.

      I also expect a final “patch” to address any issues that are found soonish after that.

    I am playing it but i found out that the game won’t save.

    System save does not work either. Have you gotten this feedback after the final release?

      Hi Brian!
      I think this is not related to our project files since our project doesn’t affect game mechanics/save files at all. It only replaces graphic files.
      It also happened to me in the past, and it was related to the Steam cloud system
      Try to make a backup of the file savegame00.sav inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[your user ID]\254700\remote\
      Deactivating the Steam cloud for resident evil 4
      Delete the savegame00.sav file
      Run the game to create a new savegame00.sav
      Close the game
      Overwrite the new generated savegame00.sav with the old one (with your old saves)
      And run the game again…

      Try any variation of this method that comes to your mind. I really don’t know what exactly fixed my problem in the past…
      I hope you can fix it!

        ¿crees que un programador pueda arreglar los errores de animación a 60fps? De esas cosas que se mueven al doble de rápido o de plano se buguean.
        Es que están ancladas al framerate y no al tiempo, y eso se genera en el código.
        Sería interesante ver

    ” Everyone keeps mentioning this ” black shirt ” Saddler wears. I’ve ripped the cinematic model into blender, isn’t that object just a ” shadow ” to where his neck meets his clothing? Last time I checked it only has geometry right underneath his neck hole / seam, and that’s it. If he wore a shirt + that long sleeved shirt underneath his robes, it would look quite silly ( unless that’s how fashion worked back then ) This is my artistic rendition, if you want to check it out, since I guess we’ll never know how he looks. If you think it’s accurate, please let me know. XD ”

      This matches perfectly with what’s inside the purple clothes. Good job!
      I love the socks design ;D

      It looks much better in this image than in the game. In the cutscenes looks like there’s something wrong because it’s completely black. I need to increase the shadowing level around the lowest part of the visible skin.
      In any case, he definitely wears some black clothes under the purple coat

    maybe they can help recreate those cutscenes. they sometimes do recreate or increase the quality of special effects in movies maybe they can help recreate the 8 minutes of new footage in separate ways.

      RE4 UHD doesn’t use TAA, it uses MSAA. And yes, anti-aliasing can be disabled from the game options, or set to X2, X4 or X8 values.

        Even when on x2 or off anti-aliasing the image looks blurry it’s obvious that it uses the same TAA anti-aliasing

    Wait WHAT (happy new year to you all, BTW)? WHY are you using PS 4 port instead of original Gamecube/PS 2/PC release? I feel like this is not very fair. You guys been using assets from original first versions for the comparison reasons thus far, but now you’re using PS 4? What am I missing here?

      This is just an exception.
      I wanted to show how the PS4 port doesn’t fix any wrong thing from the PC port, and what’s worse, there are even more missing effects.
      As you can see they are really small images, so people focus their attention on the effects and not on the textures/models.
      Also, I’ve seen some comments here and there claiming the PS4 “remaster” is an improvement, and it’s good enough. IMO it’s even worse than the PC port.
      So, I posted these images for the record 😉

      The rest of comparison images (in the future chapter 5 comparison images gallery) as usual will compare vanilla and modded PC port.

    Hey I’ve commented something like this before but I’m gonna voice it again. I’m not a fan of the overly detailed monster textures specifically on the gore limbs. There are so many ridges and so much contrast that it’s almost like zebra striped and reminds me more of a dinosaur skin type of rough texture instead of the wet fleshy type of texture.

    It’s really hard to communicate this point. I think that the combination of overly contrasted and detailed textured with low poly meshes and specularity makes it look fake. I think less individual details would be better. For example Leon’s face is higher resolution but you didn’t add a bunch of high contrast wrinkles or scars.

    Really sorry. I don’t want to be mean. I love your work I just think that a game like Doom Eternal or Dead Space 3 would be good references for fleshy monsters.

      The final release is not ready yet. It will be after all the minigames are also remastered 😉

    Heys guys. I’m trying to install the mod. My version of the game is the Ultimate HD Edition. I extracted the mod into the base game folder but a message appears saying “Could not find specified path”. There’s no option in the menu to select HD textures. What’s happening here? Can someone please help me out?

    I recently was trying to download the “RE4HDPROJECT-RELEASE3” from the links provided, however, the links (including the mirror links) don’t do anything. The mirror links showed files have been removed. Is there another way I could get the file?

      You can download a torrent file (right click and “save link as” if normal click doesn’t work)
      Remember this is an old version released on 2018. The final pack is not ready yet
